So much more than swords

We know of the swash buckling scenes in movies. We’ve seen Sinbad fight through adventures in the Seven Seas. We’ve witnessed how King Arthur defended Camelot with his Excalibur. And we all know of the stories of knights going off to defend their land as they venture off into the Crusades. Knights, pirates and Asian warriors, they carried different swords and more weaponry than we can imagine!

Swords are only the beginning

First, there is the hand-to-hand combat. We have different swords for different purposes. Great Swords and Broadswords are used for battle in the medieval times, the times of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Other than swords, there are also daggers, smaller; much lighter versions that often proved useless against a sword but also lend its own protection for a knight if he loses his sword in battle.

Then there are the bows and arrows that make for attacking from a distance possible. This is usually the first kind of attack employed when meeting another army on a large field or when defending a castle from a raid. There is the long bow and then the much more modern crossbow that is much more efficient and accurate than its ancestral weapon brother.

Other medieval items used in close battle include the mace. This is a long metal rod with a spiked head at the end. The spiked head may or may not be dangling from a chain. The chain makes it a much more unstable weapon however, it increases the reach and the flexibility of the wielder.

There is also the war hammer. Which is, how it sounds, a much larger version of a regular hammer that will have a blunt rounded edge on one end and a spike end on the other. This is usually much shorter than a sword but definitely inflicts a different kind of damage on the enemy as well.

Swords and more weaponry were used during battle; each one has a purpose and a distinct manner of usage. Each and every one of them, as impressive, if not more, than the next.
